Driver's License

To drive a car in Japan, it is necessary to have an international license obtained in signatory countries of the Geneva Convention, or a driver's license issued in Japan. AN international driver's license is valid for one year from date of entry to Japan. When the holder of a valid foreign driver's license has lived in Japan for a minimum of three months, this license can be changed into a Japanese driver's license at the following locations:

[Automobile insurance ]

There are two types of automobile insurance in Japan. One is "mandatory insurance (automobile third party liability insurance)," which all drivers are legally required to obtain. The other type is "voluntary insurance."

Mandatory insurance (automobile third party liability insurance)

All motorcycles and cars driven on public roads are required to have mandatory insurance. The purpose of this insurance is to ensure minimum compensation for victims in case of a traffic accident. Insurance is therefore paid only in the event of bodily injury. Insurance premiums should be paid when having an automobile inspection.

Voluntary insurance

This is insurance against having to pay compensation that exceeds the maximum amount payable under automobile third party liability insurance, or compensation for property damage, such as to a third party's car, fence, house, shop etc. Various types of coverage are available from each insurance company. It is recommended that you select and obtain a combination that meets your needs.
